Life Skills Classes

Life Skills Classes: Students who have been determined to be autistic, severely mentally retarded, multi-disabled or traumatic brain injured (TBI) are served in Life Skills classes. Academic and pre-academic skills (reading, language, math, science and social studies) are provided in these classes. The academic goals are written based on individualized needs and according to the State of Alabama-Course of Study- Extended Standards for Special Education. The curriculum also includes self-help skills, communication, socialization, mobility and fine motor skills. Students are assisted in developing pre-vocational and vocational skills through participation in job-skills training, community activities and field trips. The Life Skills class is based at Children’s Center. Placement in a Life Skills class is determined by a student’s Individualized Education Plan (IEP).
